All transactions carried out overseas would attract a charge of 3.5% as transaction fee. This fee would include the charges which are paid out to VISA or MasterCard for converting the value of overseas credit card transactions into INR. Transactions affected at merchant establishments which are registered overseas but having branches in India would also attract a 0.80% transaction fee payable to VISA or MasterCard and this fee would be included in the credit card statement issued to the credit card holder every month

Surcharges

The rate of surcharge depends on the nature of transaction. For railway transactions, a surcharge of Rs.25 or 2.5% of the transaction value (whichever is higher) is levied, for petrol transactions it would be higher of Rs.10 or 2.5% of the transaction value.

Service Tax

A tax of 14% s charged as Service Tax on the service charges

Pick up fee for cheque or cash

For overdue card accounts, Rs.100 would be levied for payments which are collected by authorized representatives of the bank. This charge would be reflected in the next month’s credit card statement

Minimum Amount Due

There is a Minimum Amount Due limit in the credit cards offered by Standard Chartered which is supposed to be paid every month in respect of the outstanding card bill. The Minimum Amount Due payable every month would be calculated as being higher of the following:

  1. 5% of the value of the outstanding balance reflected in the credit card statement
  2. Sum of all instalments billed, interest, fees, other charges, amount which is over the limit and 1% of the principal amount
  3. Rs.250

For the above computation, if the balance reflected in the credit card statement is less than Rs.250, the entire amount reflected in the statement would have to be paid.

Annualized Percentage Rate (APR)

The interest rate charged monthly is computed for the entire year to calculate the Annualized Percentage Rate or APR. The monthly interest rate is 3.1% and thus the corresponding Annualized Percentage Rate would be 37.20% per annum. Interest rate on cash transactions would be 3.49% per month or 41.88% annually. The applicable rate of interest on the credit cards would range from APR 37.20% to APR 41.88%. The Annualized Percentage Rate would be set by the bank within this range whenever a credit card is bought and once set, the rate would be effective for a minimum of 3 months after which it is open to revision. Any revision in the APR would be informed to the credit card holder in the next card statement and would be applicable for the next 3 months

Interest-free Grace Period

The date of paying the credit card dues which is called the Payment Due Date ranges from 18 days to 25 days after the credit card statement date. Thus, the credit card holder can enjoy an interest-free credit period of 18-48 days to 25-55 days based on the Payment Due Date. However, this interest-free period would not be applicable on cash advances and revolving balances because they are charged an interest from the date of transaction.

Levy of interest

If the cardholder chooses the part payment facility of partly settling his credit card bills or if the payment is not received by the bank within the Payment Due Date, interest is charged by the banks offering credit cards. This interest would be levied on the daily outstanding balance of the card. Interest would be charged from the transaction date to the statement generation date in the current statement cycle and the bank would charge the interest from the date of transaction to the date of payment. Every payment made towards the outstanding credit card bill would be first used to pay off any previous credit card statement balances.
