Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched mAadhaar, a mobile app that will sync your Aadhaar details like name, date of birth, gender, address, photo and biometric data on your mobile phone. This app is currently in the beta stage which can be downloaded from the Google Playstore for free.
How Does It Work?
To use this app, it is necessary to link your mobile number with your Aadhaar. In case you have not done this yet, you will need to visit the nearest Aadhaar center, fill in the Aadhaar data update form, attach an ID proof, verify your biometric details and allow 10 days (approx.) to link your mobile number with your Aadhaar card. Once your mobile number is linked with Aadhaar, you can download the app from the Google Playstore. After this, you need to set up your profile. Here's how you do it:
To start the setup, you will get an OTP on your registered mobile number for verification. Enter the OTP carefully and proceed to the next step
After you setup your profile, you need to create a password which should of 6-12 characters long and should be a mix of numbers and alphabets. Make sure that you choose a unique, difficult yet easy to remember password. This password will be required every time to login or take any action on the app
- The next step will ask you to enter your Aadhaar details. After entering the data, a verification number will be sent to your registered mobile number (which the app will read automatically) and your data will get synced
So, How Will The mAadhaar App Help Users?
After downloading, you need to setup your profile on the app. After the successful setup, details linked to your Aadhaar card like name, address, etc. will be stored in the app. You can use/share this Aadhaar profile using third party apps like NFC, QR codes or email. For example, if you are buying a new SIM card, you can share your Aadhaar card easily with this app.
Features of mAadhaar App
Carry Your Aadhaar On Your Mobile
Once you sync your Aadhaar data with the app, you can easily carry your Aadhaar number and other details anywhere on your mobile.
Lock/Unlock Biometric Data
You can secure your authentication by locking your biometric data after enabling Biometric Locking System. The user can easily unlock this from the settings menu in the app when one needs to authenticate the biometric details.
Instead of SMS based OTP, this app will automatically generate Time Based One Time (TOTP) password, which is more secure
You can view your updated Aadhaar details in the app's profile after the update request is completed.
Share Data Via QR Code
Instead of manual entry, one can share the eKYC data using NFC, QR code, Bluetooth, email, etc. The app password will be needed to authenticate this action.
How Safe Is This App?
The idea behind introducing this app is to make sharing of Aadhaar profile simpler. As far as the data security is concerned, it has the basic measure of entering password every time you open the app or want to carry out any action on the app. This app comes with a biometric lock feature to secure the data. Other than this, it also has "TOTP generation" that is the Time-based (one time) password which can be used instead of SMS based OTP (as mentioned above). It is made clear by UIDAI that the user is responsible for sharing the details. Therefore, it is recommended that you use this app carefully. However, your details might be at stake if you lose your smartphone. The UIDAI has not mentioned about the parameters or ways to secure the data on this app.
