A Demand Draft (DD) is a prepaid instrument that is issued by the bank. It guarantees a certain amount of payment to the payee (a person or an entity) and cannot be transferred to another person. A demand draft is different from a cheque. A demand draft is generally considered to be more reliable and credible than a cheque. A DD is a valid and guaranteed assurance of payment within a time limit. The following are the features of a demand draft:
- A demand draft is valid for a period of three months.
- A demand draft is payable to a person or organization upon demand.
- A demand draft can be en-cashed only by the individual or entity on whose name the draft has been drawn.
- A demand draft cannot be paid to a bearer. This is another factor that increases the security associated with payment, as compared to a cheque.
