The interest rate on your credit card is calculated by considering factors like transaction amount, transaction date, statement date and more. Let’s understand with the help of an example of how the interest is calculated on your HSBC credit card:
Assume that the credit card interest rate charged by the bank is 3.49% p.m. or 41.88% p.a. Let’s take the below assumptions:
If you fail to pay your dues by the due date, i.e. 26 May 2022, the finance charges will be levied by the bank. Besides payment charges, you will also have to pay the late payment fee.
However, if you pay Rs. 10,000 before the due date, say 21 May 2022 and does not make any further purchases till the statement generation date, i.e., 6 June 2022. Then the interest levied will be:
Due Amount = Interest on the whole amount from the date of the transaction till the date of partial payment + Interest on the remaining amount from the day after the date of payment to the next statement generation date
Interest from the Date of Transaction to the Partial Payment Date: [21 (Number of days from the date of transaction to payment date)*20,000 (Full amount) x 41.88% (Interest rate per annum)] ÷ 365 = Rs. 481.90
Interest from Partial Payment Date to Statement Generation Date: [15 (Days between partial payment date to the day before statement generation date) x 10,000 (Outstanding amount) x 41.88% (Interest rate per annum)] ÷ 365 (Days in a year) = Rs. 172.10
Total Interest Amount = 481.90 + 172.10 = Rs. 654
HSBC Bank offers an interest-free credit period of up to 48 days without any finance charge levied to the credit card account. It is the period between your last statement date and the current due date. During this period, you do not have to pay the interest accrued on the purchases. However, this is applicable only if the credit card’s outstanding balance, is settled within 3 days of payment due date. Remember, the free credit period will not be applicable for cash advance transactions.
