

To ensure better security and smoother transactions, NPCI has mandated modifications to the existing UPI rules, which will come into effect from August 1st 2025. These changes shall affect both users and service providers. If you use UPI frequently, you should know these changes related to balance checks, payment status enquiry, autopay modifications, etc. Let us understand the changes being implemented and how they may impact your UPI transactions.

1. Limited Account Balance Enquiry
- UPI users will be able to check their account balance up to a maximum of 50 times within 24 hours.
- This limit is set separately for each UPI app.
- UPI apps will not be allowed to check user balance automatically in the background.
2. Modified Autopay Transactions
- UPI Autopay set for recurring transactions related to EMI payments, bill payments, OTT subscriptions, etc., shall be conducted only during non-peak hours.
- As per some UPI app providers, non-peak hour timings suggested are 1 pm to 5 pm and 9:30 pm to 10 am.
- For every UPI mandate, 1 main transaction would be initiated with up to 3 more retries only.
3. Limited Account Details Enquiry
- A user can view the list of bank accounts linked with the mobile number for UPI transactions only up to 25 times within 24 hours.
- This limit is individually capped for each UPI app that a user operates.
- The UPI app cannot create a fresh enquiry without your permission.
4. Restrictions on Transaction Status Enquiry
- The final transaction status (success or pending) would be displayed within seconds on the app.
- The number of times the transaction status can be checked has been limited to 3.
- There should be a gap of at least 90 seconds between two status enquiries.
5. Non-Compliance Penalties to be Imposed on UPI Apps
- UPI apps not complying with the stated rules will face penalties imposed by NPCI.
- These apps can face API access restrictions from NPCI
- Restrictions on onboarding new UPI customers can also be imposed for non-compliance
- No penalty to be imposed on any UPI user by NPCI or the provider bank/app

Important Points Regarding UPI Rules Changing from August 1st 2025
- No UPI limit changes have been made, and existing UPI limits shall remain in force.
- No cap on the number of transactions made by a user to a merchant (capping of 20 peer-to-peer transactions shall remain).
- There are no changes related to UPI Lite and UPI Circle.
- No GST or fee shall be implemented for any UPI transaction.
- The new UPI rules shall apply to all UPI apps, including the BHIM UPI app.
