The government has asked the banks (both private and public sector) to provide Aadhaar enrolment and update facility within their branches so that the customers can link their bank accounts with Aadhaar by December 31, 2017. Banks are advised to provide this facility in one out of 5-6 nearby branches, since it might be difficult to provide the same in all branches. Bank customers, who do have an Aadhaar card yet or their details are not updated or are incorrect, can now head to a bank branch nearby with the enrollment and update facility. Earlier, this facility was available only at Aadhaar centres and camps.
This development comes after the amendment of “The Prevention of Money Laundering Act” which has made it mandatory to link all bank accounts with the unique identification number by the end of 2017, otherwise the accounts will be blocked.
While most banks have enabled customers to link their Aadhaar Card number with their bank accounts online, it is anticipated that many customers might not have an Aadhaar Card or their details, like address, photograph may be incorrect or not updated, which may lead rejection in the linkage process. By providing Aadhaar enrolment and update facility within the bank branches, customers can now get their Aadhaar issues resolved easily.
Till now, only public sector banks could provide Aadhaar enrolment facility, but with Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulation 2016, all scheduled banks can become UIDAI registrars and provide for enrolment and update facilities to customers.
