What is the difference between a savings account and a salary account?
A salary account is basically a type of savings account. While you need to be an employee in the public sector, private sector or a government employee to open a salary account, a savings account can be opened by salaried as well as non-salaried persons likewise.
The basic purpose of a salary account is to credit salary and thus a salary account is also a zero balance account. Please note that the interest rates of a salary account are the same as that of a savings account unless stated otherwise by the provider.
Is it necessary to open a salary account if I already have a savings account?
No, it’s not mandatory. You can get your salary credited to your savings account as well. However, it may vary as per the terms laid out by your employer.
What is the minimum balance required to keep in a BOI salary account?
There is no requirement to maintain a minimum balance in any of the salary accounts extended by the Bank of India.
