Via Email

RBL bank credit cardholders can cancel their cards by requesting it online via an email. You can send an email with necessary details, such as name, date of birth, card number and expiry date, to supercardservice@rblbank.com for BFL SuperCards or cardservices@rblbank.com for other RBL credit cards.

Visit RBL Bank Branch

To initiate card cancellation offline, customers can visit the RBL bank branch and submit a written letter requesting credit card cancellation. They may also be asked to submit the credit card, cut diagonally, along with identity proof.

Things to Keep in Mind While Closing RBL Bank Credit Card

Here are some things to keep in mind while initiating RBL credit card cancellation request:

  • Clear out all the credit card account dues, including EMIs, loans, balance transfers, etc. before initiating card cancellation
  • Redeem all the accrued reward points as the bank usually cancels the remaining points once a credit card closing request has been initiated

RBI's New Rules on Credit Card Closure

  • Credit cards shall be closed within 7 working days after raising a credit card closure request. However, the card would only be closed if the cardholder has paid off any outstanding amounts.
  • Credit card issuers will be liable to pay a fine of Rs. 500 every day until the card account is not closed after the customer has raised a card closure request
  • If a card is not used for a year, the card issuer will deactivate it and notify the user. If the cardholder does not respond within 30 days, the account will be closed.
  • Card issuers must provide several channels for submitting a closure request, such as mobile banking, online banking, a helpline, an IVR, a dedicated email address and a mobile app.
  • If the cardholder's account still has credit available, it should be transferred to his or her bank account.
  • The credit bureau must be notified by credit card issuers within 30 days of the closure.

Consequences of Closing Your Credit Card Account

Closing a credit card account leads to the reduction of your total available credit amount. This, in turn, increases the credit utilisation ratio (CUR) if your expenses remain the same as before the credit card closure. Also, if the closed credit card was quite old or if it was your only credit line, then your average credit history will also shorten drastically. As a result, this will have a negative effect on your credit score and it can experience a considerable drop as these changes in credit history and CUR together can make you look credit hungry.
