IIT Undergraduate Course Annual Fees Set To Double

IIT Undergraduate

The annual course fees for undergraduate (UG) courses of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) are expected to be hiked two-fold from the upcoming academic session. This announcement made by the ministry of Human Resource Department (HRD) will lead to an increase of the fees for UG courses at IITs from the current level of approximately Rs. 90,000 to the new level of Rs. 2 lakhs annually.

This hike in fees of IITs, considered to be among India’s premier institutions, comes on the back of a recent announcement that differently-abled, as well as SC-ST students, will receive a full waiver of their course fees at IITs. Additionally, the option of interest free education loans for general category students at IITs was also announced.

This course fee hike is in fact less than the earlier suggestion to increase the annual course fees of IITs to Rs. 3 lakhs. The hike was limited to the Rs. 2 lakhs per year level by recommendation of the HRD Minister Smriti Irani, who is the chairperson of the board. From the next academic session onwards, apart from the IITs, students at NITs will also have to shell out Rs. 1.25 Lakhs per year after a fee hike was agreed on last year.
