What is a Prepaid Connection?

If you have a prepaid sim, you will have to first buy a prepaid pack to use mobile services like calling, data, SMS, etc. Every prepaid plan comes with a validity period ranging anywhere between a few hours to a year, depending on the services you are availing and the plans available. Once this validity period expires, the plan’s respective services, which can be calling minutes, data or SMS services, stop working until you recharge again with another plan. That's why in prepaid plans it is important to keep a track of the validity date to ensure uninterrupted use of mobile services.

What is a Postpaid Connection?

In case of a postpaid sim, you use the services first and then pay a consolidated bill based on the services utilised at the end of the billing cycle. It is just like how it is with your utility bills, you first use the service and as per your usage a bill generated at the end of the month, which you have to pay by its due date.

Many telecom operators also offer postpaid family plans, allowing you to add multiple family members under a single plan

FAQs

What is the main difference between a prepaid and postpaid connection?

In case of a prepaid connection, you recharge plan before using the service, and in case of postpaid connection, you make payment after using the service.

Is prepaid cheaper than postpaid?

Generally, normal prepaid plans with basic benefits are cheaper than postpaid plans.

Can I change prepaid to postpaid without changing my number?

Yes, you can switch from prepaid to postpaid without changing the number. Please note that many providers come with some rules, such as that after converting to postpaid from prepaid you cannot move back after 90 days.

Is there any speed difference between prepaid and postpaid?

No, prepaid and postpaid users generally get the same internet speed on the same network. However, speeds may differ if you have exhausted your daily data limit or the operator prioritises certain postpaid plans during network congestion.

Does postpaid include unlimited data?

It depends on the plan and the telecom operator. For example, most of the Airtel postpaid plans come with unlimited data, while providers like Jio and Vi provide limited data. But the postpaid plans with unlimited data usually come with a fair usage policy (FUP). After the FUP limit is reached, internet speeds may be reduced, depending on the plan.

How long does prepaid to postpaid conversion take?

Depending on the telecom provider, prepaid to postpaid conversion takes anywhere between a few minutes to two working days.

Are there any conversion charges for prepaid to postpaid conversion?

No, usually the conversion is free, but if you have any outstanding on your prepaid or postpaid number, you will have to clear those before switching.

Can prepaid users get OTT benefits?

Yes, most of the telecom providers offer OTT benefits with premium plans. These plans may include some popular OTT subscriptions like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Youtube Premium and Jio Hotstar.

Do postpaid plans include OTT subscriptions?

Yes, major telecom providers like Airtel, Jio and Vi offer OTT subscriptions with their postpaid plans. You can go through these plans via the Paisabazaar app or website.

What happens if prepaid validity expires?

Since prepaid services work on an advance payment. So after the validity expires, your plan benefits such as outgoing calls, SMS and data services will stop immediately. Incoming services may remain active for a limited time on some providers.
