For many premium HDFC credit card users, SmartBuy gift vouchers have been one of the easiest ways to earn accelerated rewards on everyday spending.
Instead of paying merchants directly, cardholders often purchased gift vouchers for brands like Amazon, Flipkart or other retail brands through SmartBuy and then used those vouchers for their purchases. This helped them accumulate considerable reward points and redeem those points to save on other spends. This strategy turned out especially helpful for premium card users as the redemption ratio of 1:1 allowed them to extract maximum value.
With the introduction of the separate monthly cap, this strategy becomes less rewarding for users making large voucher purchases every month. While occasional users may notice little difference, those who consistently purchased high-value vouchers are likely to see lower reward earnings.
Example: How Does the New Cap Affect Reward Earnings?
Suppose an HDFC Infinia cardholder purchases Rs. 30,000 worth of eligible gift vouchers through SmartBuy during a calendar month.
If the purchase earned 10X reward points, this meant the Rs. 30,000 transaction would earn 50 reward points per Rs. 150 spent, which becomes 10,000 reward points, which the cardholder could redeem against travel bookings via SmartBuy and save Rs. 10,000.
However, under this revision, rewards will be capped at 3,000 points no matter how much the user spends.
