Permanent Account Number or PAN is a special and unique 10 digit number that is assigned by India’s Income Tax Department to an individual or an organization to identify and track financial transactions and the corresponding tax filed. One can apply pan card online, just follow an easy tips below.
The concept of PAN card online first came into existence in 1972. India, earlier, had a system called General Index Register (GIR). Since this system was manual and was not meant to provide a unique number to taxpayers from different parts of the country, it was scrapped and the concept of PAN was introduced a few years later. Initially PAN was voluntary on the part of the tax payer, but in the year 1976, this system was made statutory by the government under section 139A of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
Over time, the application process for a PAN Card has evolved. Today, it is very easy and user-friendly. You can apply for a PAN Card both online and offline.
The online PAN card application process takes place on its official website or NSDL website and the offline application process takes place at the various PAN agencies and centres that are present on the district level. For both online as well as offline PAN application, a special form called form 49A needs to be filled properly and submitted by the tax payers.
Institutions that can opt for a PAN Card Online
Along with individuals, there are several enterprises that are eligible to opt for PAN card. They are:
- Hindu Undivided Families or HUFs.
- Authorities running locally.
- Minors (individuals under the age of 18 years).
- Senior citizens (individuals above 60 years of age).
The Online Process for PAN Card Application by NSDL is as Follows
- Go to https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/index.html
- Correctly fill in the details in the form 49A
- Submit the form and immediately you will be redirected to payment option
- Pay the processing fee of Rs.107 including service tax of 14.5% via debit card, credit card or net banking
- The fee increases to Rs. 962 if the application contains a foreign address
- Upon successful payment of the processing fee, an acknowledgement number is received by the applicant for future reference purpose
- After that, take a print out of the acknowledgement receipt and send it to the Income Tax department with the following attested documents:
- Two recent color passport photographs
- ID Proof
- Address Proof
- Proof of Date of Birth
- Proof of payment of the PAN Card fees
- Within 15 days of submitting the PAN card application online, the above mentioned documents are to be sent to the NSDL office through post.
- After following the above mentioned procedure properly and carefully, the tax payer will receive the PAN within 15 working days on the address mentioned by him.
The Online PAN Application at UTIITSL Website is as follows
- Go to the UTIITSL website – https://www.myutiitsl.com/PAN_ONLINE/PANApp
- Fill in the various details application form 49A like name of the applicant, residing address and also the father’s name of the applicant
- After correctly filling in all the required details in the form and before clicking on the ‘submit button’, the applicant must click on the ‘validation’ tab. This is because, before submitting the form, in the validation step, the applicant can check and correct any mistakes, if any, in the details mentioned by him.
- Then, the applicant must make the payment for the processing fee through net banking, credit card or debit card whatever is desired by him. For this purpose, the applicant has two payment getaway options to choose from namely Billdesk and Payu.
- After successful payment is made by the applicant, he receives a confirmation regarding the same along with. If the payment made is unsuccessful, the message for the same is shown on the screen of the applicant. He may then either cancel the entire transaction or retry again to make the required payment
- Once the payment is successful, the applicant then needs to print the application copy, sign it and send it, along with two passport sized colour photographs and self-attested copies of identity proof, address proof and date of birth proof, to the UTIITSL PAN processing offices that are located in four metropolitan Indian cities like Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai.
- After following the above mentioned procedure properly and carefully, the tax payer will receive the PAN within 15 working days on the address mentioned by him. The acknowledgement receipt contains the acknowledgement number that can be used to track the PAN status.
It is to be noted that if the applicant is opting for a thumb print instead of his signature on the application form, then it has to be verified and attested by a Notary, Magistrate or Gazetted Officer.
Things to Remember for Online PAN Card Application
Though the process of PAN card application is very easy and trouble-free, a slight mistake on the part of the tax payer can create many problems. The applicant must always remember certain pointers that are to be thoroughly followed for a proper PAN card application process. These pointers are as follows:
- The details filled in the PAN card form should coincide with the details mentioned in the supporting documents like identity proof and address proof provided by the tax payer.
- To avoid PAN card disqualification, a thumb impression of the Notary or the Magistrate should be attested before form submission.
- The address mentioned in the form should be full and other contact details should also be accurate and proper.
- The application form 49A should be filled in capital letters.
- No form of corrections or over writing should be done in the application form.
- In the columns of first name and last name, initials should not be used.
- A new PAN card should not be applied if the previous one is lost or stolen.
For those who prefer to apply for a PAN Card offline, there exists the traditional method of “paper or physical form filling”. The individual in this case needs to be fill in the requisite details in Form 49A and submit it with the supporting documents, photograph and processing fees, to an UTITSL or NSDL Pan service centre. Tracking of PAN
Applicants can also check the progress of their PAN application. The status of the PAN Card issuance can be tracked on the Income Tax department – www.incometaxindia.gov.in or NSDL – www.tin-nsdl.com or UTITSL – www.utiitsl.com websites.
In case an individual or entity, who is required to obtain PAN:
(i) but has not applied for it,
(ii) has entered incorrect PAN details
a. in a transaction wherein PAN details are required by law
b. to a person who is entitled to collect tax at source
will be liable to pay a penalty of Rs. 10,000 for each such default, under Section 272B of the Income Tax Act.
Also, the same penalty can be levied on any person or entity that holds multiple PAN Cards. If multiple PAN Cards have been erroneously allotted to an individual or entity, then he/she should surrender the additional PAN card(s) to the Income Tax Department, immediately.
If tax evasion amounts to more than Rs. 25,00,000, with incorrect PAN details furnished , such individual or individuals belonging to such an enterprise may also face six months to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment along with the fine. If the amount is less than Rs. 25 Lakh, imprisonment can be maximum two years but not less than three months.
