About L & T MidCap Fund

L & T Mid Cap Fund is an open ended fund that predominantly invests in mid cap stocks that have scalable opportunity with strong competitive advantage and a potential for capital generation in the long term.

Medium sized firms have the potential to grow in a bullish market despite underperformance in short terms as they are under-researched and under-owned initially. It generates higher returns when shares comes to value realization. L & T Mid Cap Fund invests in stocks that have records of good governance.

It invests more than 80% of the fund in equities and equity related instruments while around 20% is invested in debt, security and money market instruments. Among equities, a major corpus i.e. approximately 60%-70%  is invested in mid cap stocks.

Who Should Invest?

  • The fund scheme is suitable for long term investment with the goal of wealth creation. Mid Cap stocks generally underperform in short term. It is ideal for investors with 3 to 5 year horizon
  • Mid Cap stocks have a bottom up approach and pick up on undervalued stocks that will grow at a higher rate in a broader market. Therefore it is suitable for patient investors
  • A well diversified portfolio as it  invests in sectors of Finance, Construction and Healthcare among others. L & T Asset Management Company (AMC) is also one of the biggest fund houses in the country

Risks

It is a high risk investment as although mid cap stocks are expected to come to it’s value with time, sometimes it may not happen. Stock prices may remain stagnant at low cost or fall further. History has it that mid cap stocks perform well in sluggish market, sometimes outdoing large cap stocks however it cannot be guaranteed and investors must have high risk appetite.

Will You Pay Tax?

If you withdraw or redeem the units before one year of investment, Short Term Capital Gains Tax of 15% is levied. Whereas, Long Term Capital Gains Tax above ₹1 lakh will be taxed at 10% after completion of 1 year of investment.

Let’s say, an individual has ₹2 lakh disposable taxable income in a given financial year, and s/he decides to invest the amount in ELSS. ₹1.5 lakh out of this amount would be exempted from any taxation.₹50,000 would be taxed as per the income tax slab of the investor.

It should be noted that the investment in ELSS remains locked-in for 3 years.

The returns from ELSS are taxed like that from any other equity mutual fund scheme. However, since the units can’t be redeemed before 3 years of investment, only Long Term Capital Gains Tax of 10% above ₹1 lakh will be levied.

Suppose an investor has made a capital gain of ₹1.5 lakh on investment in this scheme, and withdraws the amount after 1 year of investment, Long Term Capital Gains Tax of 10% would be levied on ₹50000. ₹1Lakh is exempted from taxation. The payable tax would be ₹5000.
