About Axis Multi Cap Fund
Axis Multi Cap Fund, as the name defines it is a fund that invests in companies of multiple types of capitalizations. It tries to achieve an optimum portfolio construction by diversification of investments in all types of companies – large cap, mid cap and small cap. It is ideal for medium/long term revenue and principal generation. It is an equity scheme investing predominantly in quality stocks with growth potential and risk mitigation capacity.
Investing in multi-cap helps the fund manager to tap the best opportunity in the market and give maximum returns to the investors. While large cap equities assure stability and endurance to market risks, mid cap and small cap shares with growth potential will earn better returns in the long term. Even when markets are down, investments in large cap may cover up the losses from small and medium sized companies. An ideal mix leads to right risk-return adjustment.
Who Should Invest?
- Those who are ready to invest with medium to long term investment perspective with the objective of wealth accumulation. Equity as an asset class also has the potential to beat inflation
- Those who are ready to take moderate risks as major part of the corpus is allocated to large cap stocks that ensure good returns while some undervalued stocks may perform better in the long run.
There are no guaranteed results as market risks are always associated with equities. Some small and mid cap stocks may not perform as expected and even large cap stocks may underperform. Also, investors need to take the risk of betting money on a new fund as it was launched in November 2017. Therefore, not much previous track record is available to determine the performance, especially the 3 year and 5 year returns. However, it has outperformed the benchmark since its inception.

Will You Pay Tax?
If you withdraw or redeem the units before one year of investment, Short Term Capital Gains Tax of 15% is levied. Whereas, Long Term Capital Gains Tax above ₹1 lakh will be taxed at 10% after completion of 1 year of investment.
Let’s say, an individual has ₹2 lakh disposable taxable income in a given financial year, and s/he decides to invest the amount in ELSS. ₹1.5 lakh out of this amount would be exempted from any taxation.₹50,000 would be taxed as per the income tax slab of the investor.
It should be noted that the investment in ELSS remains locked-in for 3 years.
The returns from ELSS are taxed like that from any other equity mutual fund scheme. However, since the units can’t be redeemed before 3 years of investment, only Long Term Capital Gains Tax of 10% above ₹1 lakh will be levied.
Suppose an investor has made a capital gain of ₹1.5 lakh on investment in this scheme, and withdraws the amount after 1 year of investment, Long Term Capital Gains Tax of 10% would be levied on ₹50000. ₹1Lakh is exempted from taxation. The payable tax would be ₹5000.
