Why is the Government Planning to Link Driving Licenses with Aadhaar?
The Government has come across many instances where a single person has more than one driving license. As per the acts related to road transport, a person cannot possess multiple drivers’ licenses. Driving license issued in one state is valid in all other states and union territories of the country. Thus, a person need not have multiple driving licenses.
To curb this menace, the central government is planning to link Aadhaar with driving licenses. Licenses not linked with Aadhaar would be deactivated after the end of deadline. As only one driving license can be linked with Aadhaar, the issue of duplicate licenses can be easily controlled.
The process has not been started as of now but will soon be initiated once the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways finalises all legal and infrastructural arrangements. In case a person has multiple driving licenses, he can surrender it in the regional office of the Road Transport Department.
